Welcome to How to Listen

Equipment Required

STANDARD AUDIO CDs

Any CD player or a computer.

MP3 FORMAT CDs

Any CD player with MP3 on the case will play both standard and MP3 format discs. These discs can also be played on DAISY players, on most DVD players and on computers. From a computer the audio file can be transferred, for personal use only, to an iPod or similar player.*

DAISY CDs

DAISY format material is usually played on a special DAISY player. These are supplied as part of the Talking Book service or can be purchased from RNIB, among other suppliers. DAISY structure allows the reader to search material such as cookery books, reference books and the Bible, quickly and easily. Equipment for playing cassettes, standard audio and MP3 discs is currently much cheaper than specialist DAISY players.

BROADBAND INTERNET

Users will need a computer with a sound card and a media playing software package. These are usually supplied as standard on new computers. As well as playing directly from the computer, files can be transferred to other devices, such as iPods, memory sticks and SD cards.*

CASSETTE TAPE

Any ordinary cassette player is suitable for the services listed. Although some retailers are no longer stocking cassette players, others continue to offer a reasonable selection. The British Wireless for the Blind Fund is still supplying radio cassette players to eligible clients.

The choice of equipment will depend on the needs of the user. All of the following formats are suitable for reading material  where you expect to start at the beginning and continue to the end, possibly bookmarking on the way.

Further information on equipment and suppliers is available from the individual organisations.
